Back in my late 20s to mid 30s, I was a Yoga aficionado. Not like I was an expert level practitioner, but I was good enough to teach beginner classes. The flexibility and peace it gave me were welcomed escapes from the stresses of life at the time. I even convinced my work colleagues and family members to join the classes, where they all loved it. But, with all the work-related traveling and new life responsibilities, Yoga and other physical activities took a back seat. Boy, did I start paying for it while getting older.
In my early 40s, I started waking up daily with back pains and stiffness in my body. Touching my toes with my knees unbent was a task. I really let myself go to be honest. So, a few months ago, I decided it was time to break out the Yoga mats and get back to my old self. Luckily, Yoga is like any other function you may have done in the past but stopped doing, it may take a while to refamiliarize yourself at first, but it’s smooth sailing when you do. It’s been 2 months, and I feel like a new man. Even with my beer belly, I can touch my toes with knees unbent like any pro, and my sleep has vastly improved.
I know some of you are like, “C’mon man. I’m an old school guy, give me weights, I’m not into that Yoga chick stuff’. I hear you brother, I felt the same way, but I couldn’t even finish my first class; holding strength poses while being mindful of proper breathing is a hell of a workout… I ached for days.
So in this article, I’ll delve into the incredible benefits that yoga can bring to us men over 40. I can assure you that yoga is for everyone, especially us men to keep us limber, fit, and stress-free, even if for the session. So, grab your mat, find a comfortable space, and let’s explore the ways yoga can enhance your physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
Lengthen those muscles
Yoga incorporates a wide range of stretching exercises that target all areas of the body, helping to improve flexibility and increase joint mobility. Say goodbye to those stiff muscles and joints that we all experience as we get older.
Better posture
Regular yoga practice can help correct imbalances in your posture, counteracting the effects of sitting for long hours and your work desk and promoting proper spinal and shoulder alignment that convey confidence and security in men. Stand tall and confident and feel the difference in your everyday movements.
Activate those muscles
Yoga is not just about stretching; it also builds strength. Through a variety of poses and sequences, you’ll engage muscles you never knew existed. Think about it, how many of you right now can go in a push-up pose and remain stationary for over 2 minutes? It’s not as easy as it sounds; remember, body weight is ‘weight’, and you will get a good sweat out of it as though you were lifting dumbbells. For beginners, poses like Downward Facing Dog and Plank will challenge your body in new and exciting ways.
Full-body workout:
As discussed above, Yoga is a practice that targets multiple muscle groups simultaneously. From balancing poses to dynamic flows, you’ll develop strength, stamina, and endurance throughout your entire body, not to mention, improve how you look physically.
Breathe deeply
The high majority of people have no idea how to breathe properly. Sounds crazy right? If you get 10 people right now to take a deep breath and hold, look at their bellies. I’m willing to bet at least half of them have their bellies contracted; when in fact the diaphragm should be raised, and belly expanded (as if air is in it). Yoga emphasizes deep, conscious breathing, expanding your lung capacity and improving respiratory function. You’ll learn to breathe more efficiently, increasing oxygen intake and boosting energy levels.
Stress Reduction and Mental Well-being
Find your Zen
Yoga incorporates mindful breathing techniques and meditation, which help calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and create a space of peace within yourself.
Boost your mood
You know that feeling you get when you experience a pleasurable moment, like sex or a great massage? That’s endorphins being released in your system. The release of endorphins during yoga practice can elevate your mood and leave you feeling happier and more content.
Mind and body connection
The mind-body connection is a core principle of yoga. By bringing awareness to your breath and movement, you cultivate a state of present-moment awareness, improving focus and mental clarity.
Stress relief for the mind
Yoga provides a sanctuary for your mind, allowing you to let go of worries, anxieties, and racing thoughts. Experience a mental reset as you tune in to the present moment and cultivate a sense of inner calm.
Sleep like a baby
Yoga’s calming and relaxing effects extend beyond your practice session. By reducing stress and anxiety, yoga can improve the quality of your sleep. As I spoke about earlier, prepare to wake up feeling refreshed and energized.
Stability and coordination
The older we get, the more stiff and rugged we feel if we do not do some sort of physical activity daily. Yoga poses challenge your balance and coordination, helping to improve movement and overall stability. With regular practice, you’ll notice increased grace and ease in your movements, both on and off the mat. Yoga helps develop strong core muscles, improves balance, and enhances proprioception, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.
Join the tribe
Yoga communities are inclusive and supportive. Engaging in yoga classes and workshops provides an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, creating a sense of belonging and fostering new friendships. Ideally this should be done in person, but there are a plethora of Yoga apps available in the app stores.
Customizable Practice
Yoga is a versatile practice that can be tailored to your specific needs and abilities. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or seeking to challenge yourself, yoga offers modifications and variations for all levels.
Age with Grace and Vitality
Regular yoga practice can help you age gracefully by maintaining flexibility, strength, and mental acuity. Embrace the journey of aging with vitality, resilience, and a zest for life.
Well guys, I hope I convinced you to at least give it a try. Remember that it’s a personal practice with no judgment or competition. Embrace the process, be patient with yourself, and enjoy the physical and mental transformations that come with regular practice. From improved flexibility and strength to reduced stress and enhanced well-being, the benefits of yoga for men over 40 are truly remarkable.
